Within Temptation – Memories

- April 8th, 2008 at 4:05 am by --KALEB NATION-- -

Within-Temptation–MemoriesMy brother delves into rock music a whole lot more than I do. It is near nigh impossible for me to find songs in the midst of the screamos, metals and monstrous roarers who fill the genre and suffocate the good stuff like pillow fluff. So I stay on the surface and watch while my more musically-adventurous brother goes into the well, and let him scoop the tasty fisheses into the bucket so I can wheel the good ones up.

Somehow the group Within Temptation got Stumbled to me by my brother, and I was struck by the song Memories – ethereal and haunting and beautiful. If you like Evanescence, this one’s for you. The lead singer has a voice up there with Amy Lee, and the song is so strikingly filled with emotion that you can’t help but listen. Few singers can make you feel music like this one can; it made me think of the first time I heard Amy Lee years ago, or the credits to a movie. Twilight fans take heed.

A Guy Reads Twilight: Chapter 1

- March 27th, 2008 at 4:15 pm by --KALEB NATION-- -

In which I read Chapter 1 of Twilight, and meet a certain person whose initials are E.C. :

I’m certain most guys have experienced the same reaction when they pick it up to find out what all the fuss is about (most likely hiding in the cupboard as they do). Meyers certainly has a hand at jumping right in the story and somehow painting it all in your mind to perfection. But on to chapter 2… :D

How Did You Get Here?

- March 26th, 2008 at 5:12 pm by --KALEB NATION-- -

A selection of the odd search terms that have brought people here in the last few hours (with count in parentheses):

i am sick of waiting for the bella and+ edward film (1)

twilight by stephen meyer, a movie (1)

video of christopher paolini (3) ‘s blue shirt (1)

when will christopher paolini come out with the third book of the the inheritance trilogy (1).

im mad because the twilight cast sucks (1)

twilight movie cast (183) edward (41) by stephenie meyer (13)

is thee anyone who hasn’t red twilight (sic, and 1)

edward cullens socks (what the heck, and 1)

I hate all the futzing with jackets and scares and gloves, and how there’s never enough room on the chairs at (1)

The last one linked to me because it just so happened Scott Westerfeld said the exact same thing in my interview with him. That is the most confusing of all, next to whoever is stalking Christopher Paolini’s blue shirt.

Sherwood – Song In My Head

- February 17th, 2008 at 2:03 am by --KALEB NATION-- -

Sherwood Band Photo

-spacer-If you were to take parts of Athlete, Stellar Kart, Relient K and Coldplay, and splice them together into a musical version of Frankenstein, you would have Song In My Head by California-based band Sherwood. Frankenstein isn’t really a good word here, as the track is awesomely good, and helps me through maniacal outbreaks of vengeful abyss over the fact that Athlete’s last album had only 1 good song.

You must hear this clip all the way to the end, as the best part is the guitar. If this was an instrumental track I would have still bought it, because that guitar rocks.

They’re signed with Myspace Records which tells a story in itself. Thus, we know that they are rock influenced, have slight emo leanings, will say ‘nevermore’ or ‘demon’ or ‘black’ at least twice in their album, and will have at least one song that sounds great at 56k Myspace music player quality. Ah hah! With a title like Song In My Head, we can be hopeful they’ll nail it all at once (like broken metal splints on a black black coffin draped in sorrow and crow-shaped tears).

Anyhow, this is the best song on their new album in my opinion, and they have enough promise behind them; and on top of that, his voice seems authentic and sincere. I’ve heard live shows are their strong point, too. I wasn’t in the least bit surprised to see Relient K in their top Myspace friends list- if you’re a fan of them, but want something a tad more…(serious?)… you’ll love these guys.
