Avril Lavigne – Hot

Avril Lavigne Hot Cover Art-spacer- As usual, I hated this song when I first heard it. But also as usual, I forced myself to listen because it was Avril after all, and I don’t think she’s ever put out a song that I didn’t end up at least partially enjoying (yes, even Girlfriend, but no, not the Lil Mama remix. I do draw the line somewhere around the Spongebob Squarepants theme song).

I had to cut the verses on this so she doesn’t actually just hop into the chorus- this is a clip after all. Avril has a way of saving an awful song by throwing something in that picks the track up. After a loathsome chorus that seems almost monotone, she pulls it right out of the awfulness and slides the track into sounding pretty good.

Kim Leoni – Again

- December 21st, 2007 at 8:19 am by --KALEB NATION-- -

Every once in a while I come across some good electronic music. I’m a bit late getting to the Kim Leoni song Again (going for adds October 07) but I’m giving her a mention.

Good driving beat. I also think this would make an awesome credits song for a sci-fi movie, the way it slams into the track with the intro.

Cascada – Just Like A Pill

- December 7th, 2007 at 9:00 am by --KALEB NATION-- -

Cascada - Perfect Day album cover art I came to this new Cascada song expecting to hate it. After all, no one could possibly sing Just Like A Pill like Pink could. What hit me like a dump truck from the sky was a near-perfect dance remake of the original, staying true to the grittiness of the song and slamming me with the heavy saws after the chorus. Natalie Horler, the face and voice behind the group Cascada, has done a wonderful job on this track- and despite the fact that the song is entirely unrealistic coming from the mouth of a pop singer, I think for a song it works well.

Pink wrote this song based upon her rough teenage years and the honesty with which she speaks can only truly come from the writer herself. This version had to be cleaned up a little for radio (yeah, that DJ sound isn’t your computer skipping). For comparison, here’s the original Just Like A Pill from Pink, which came out back in September of 2002.
