The Invasion

The Invasion movie cover art-spacer-THE INVASION

Nichole Kidman does great as the lead in this thriller film involving a virus strain from outer space that converts humans into zombie-humans.

THE GOOD

NK acts perfectly. Nobody is coming near her child when she has the gun- not even human zombies.

They got a cool kid to play as her son. He did relatively well. And they had cool cell phones.

THE BAD

They should have SERIOUSLY fired their design team and redone that cover art. It is the ugliest thing I’ve seen. It repulsed me so much I almost didn’t get it. Nicole Kidman almost looks like a man, and it looks like they’re standing in Hell.

THE REST

This was Nicole Kidman’s version of Jodie Foster’s Flightplan. Both of them were in the exact same situation: they wanted to save their child. Except instead of terrorists, these are human zombies. And it had Roger Rees (‘Gluant’s restuarants were a diz-oss-tah.’).

Pan’s Labyrinth

- February 8th, 2008 at 12:01 am by --KALEB NATION-- -

Pan’s Labyrinth -spacer-If you want to see a film with gunfire, fairies, child protagonists and fantastical creatures, look no further than Pan’s Labyrinth. The plot is so ingeniously written that I was very surprised it wasn’t based upon a novel, but simply upon stacks of notes from over 20 years of writing by the director.

I came across this film in a backwards manner when I bought some of the soundtrack and liked it so much I had to see the movie. The story is set in the 1820’s, based around the young girl Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), who reads fairy stories and is forced to move with her pregnant mother to live with her stepfather, a cruel captain who has made a farm fortress against militant guerrillas. Whilst there, she is led by a fairy into a deep labyrinth underground, where a faun gives her three tasks to perform before she can become a princess.

Before that last sentence makes you scream and run away, this movie is rated R. No Disney here. The faun is a towering creature with backwards legs and a horned head: though he is terrifyingly kind. The rating comes from a few frightening scenes, like when Ofelia just barely escapes the clutches of a child-eating, skeletal monster with eyeballs in his hands. My computer (blast it) locked up twice, so unless something was in those parts, the movie wouldn’t terrify anyone who’s seen Lord Of The Rings. The ending, both sad and happy at the same time, was handled masterfully.

One final, meager note: the entire thing is in Spanish. Fortunately, this only compliments the movie, since it is so masterfully filmed you hardly notice you’re reading subtitles. I only wish they made more films like this one: though not quite rated as high, The Spiderwick Chronicles is looking to be of interest…

Kaleb Nation cast as Edward in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight film

- December 10th, 2007 at 2:30 pm by --KALEB NATION-- -

Los Angeles, California, December 10, 2007 - In a shocking and unforeseen move, Kaleb Nation has been cast as the most sought-after male in literary history.

“It was quite a shock,” Kaleb said, upon hearing of being cast as Edward Cullen, the lead character in author Stephenie Meyer’s wildly popular series of books. “To be cast as Edward was so very…unforeseen!”

The announcement comes shortly after actress Kristen Stewart was announce to play the lead role of Bella Swan, the main character of a wildly popular series of novels by author Stephenie Meyers. Her Twilight series is currently topping the bestseller lists, selling more than even Harry Potter for the past 4 weeks.

At first, Kaleb was hesitant playing a vampire, but later overcame his fear of the changes he would have to undergo in his transformation into Edward.

“It was the teeth,” Kaleb comments. “I was so worried about those- how would I do it? But then I remembered how Cate Blanchett had to grow those ears, and then teeth didn’t seem so hard after that.”

Upon the announcement, Kaleb was whisked away to California, taking time for only one brief press conference, and he is to meet with counselors, directors and promoters of the film shortly thereafter. Another unsuspected attachment to getting the part: the fame.

“I’ve got to walk around with a bodyguard now,” Kaleb says. “Every since that announcement, people have been swarming me- and the only downside is they call me Edward, not Kaleb. They like me as him better than me as me — and the movie isn’t even out! Luckily, Tony and Romano take care of things. I try to let my fans through…”

Kaleb Nation is nineteen. He resides in Texas, where he runs a blog from his website, http://www.kalebnation.com and writes books. This will be his first film. He is very excited about the role.

“Slightly disconcerting, but still great.” he says.

The movie, which begins production February 2008, will be directed by Catherine Hardwicke. Karen Rosenfelt and Greg Mooradian will produce along with Mark Morgan.
