I’m appalled at this song. It’s Avril Lavigne’s lead for the upcoming Alice In Wonderland movie, song titled “Alice (Underground)”. And it’s one of the most disturbingly shrill songs I’ve ever heard.
Most people know that I am a long-time and oft-ridiculed fan of Avril Lavigne, mostly her older stuff though one or two of her newer songs. I grew up in the early 2000′s, so you can’t blame me for my Nelly / Avril Lavigne / Black Eyed Peas / Nickelback music mix I keep in the back of my iTunes. But this is just bloody awful. The beginning 46 seconds are delightfully misleading. Then it begins to spiral down into a pit of yuck. By 1:11, I’m smashing bottles of Martinelli on my head to get the awful ringing out of my ears. I think I can hear the microphone blowing out from overmodulation (a word we used in radio when one’s voice would be too loud and blow out the speakers, though I suspect ‘overmodulation’ is not being used to its correct definition).
Why couldn’t Avril Lavigne have made an epic credits song for Alice In Wonderland like she did for Eragon? One of the best credits songs of all time:

Christopher Paolini, author of Eragon and Eldest, has announced that book 3 in the Inheritance series will be called Brisingr. I know most people who read this site are fans of the first two books, so read about it over here….
For the comment box: what do you think of the cover art? And didn’t Paolini say it would be a green dragon?

I spent my Saturday in the car most of the day, driving out to San Antonio and then rubber-banding back to Houston. I was up around 4:30 so we could get there on time, and unfortunately in my dazed stupor I forgot to pack a book. Luckily, I spotted a Borders while my mom was in Starbucks and I dashed in, stumbling up the stairs to find something. I managed to snag a copy of Eragon and was looking for the first Leven Thumps to try out, but unfortunately no one could find a copy before I had to dash back out again. The checkout people must be used to hurried customers like me: she start to offer me a Border’s card, but I waved my hands and said ‘Sorry, no time!’ So she slammed my receipt into the book, gave me a lightening-fast thank you, and had me checked out in 10 seconds, without even making me sign the receipt.
We proceeded to Houston and met up with a family who used to live close to here. We stayed there until around 9 at night. As usual it took a good thirty minutes before any of the kids would talk to someone as scary as me, but after a few British impressions, an alternate-reality Three Little Pigs story and quite a few jabs at their neighbors’ odd chimneys, all was well. I was quite surprised that good Catholic children like them knew the Souja Boy Dance, and even more surprised they knew who Soulja Boy was anyway. I tried to bring things back down to rated G by calling him 25 Cent- they cut me off saying I was wrong, it was 50 Cent. So much for un-subverting the youth. We made a bunch of videos with my cell phone camera, including one of them doing the Soulja Boy Dance and one of me as the Mad British Shusher.
On Sunday I was informed rather hastily that I am now the number 1 Kaleb according to Yahoo.com. Hopefully that will last a while. I followed that discovery with a bit more reading of Eragon followed with dashing out to be gone again by 1, to return by 7, and finally to fall into bed around 10.

Christopher Paolini, author of the Inheritance series commonly known for Eragon and Eldest, has just announced that his former trilogy of books will now have 4 novels. He is famous for being 15 when he started on his books and 19 when he was a New York Times Bestselling author, and was quite an inspiration to me for the longest time, even before I read his first book. He’s sold 16 million copies of his first two novels alone. The titles of Eragon Book 3 and Eragon Book 4 (what people are calling them for now) haven’t been put out yet, though the next book has been set for release in September of 2008, and some speculate the third book in the Inheritance series will be titled Empire. Go here for the news…
Anyone out there a fan of Eragon and Christopher Paolini? And more so, has anyone seen Christopher at a book signing before, and how big was the crowd? I looked for videos on YouTube but there aren’t many of his appearances.
Added 1/17/2008: Christopher Paolini just announced the title of book 3 will be Brisingr.

Alright, here are my favorite book covers of all time. These all seem to just leap out off the shelf, look great even when they’re a small thumbnail on Amazon, and actually draws me in to want to read the book (though I have truthfully not read many of these). Here they are:
Wonderful colors! Everything is smooth and crisp, even the font. Extremely creative. And the author happens to live within 45 minutes of my house, in the Big City nearby.
This one looks like a movie poster! All the text works perfect and the house just comes straight out of the black. The colors on this one are great too. It surprised me how well this one was done, because Peretti isn’t famous for his covers: but after this one worked, I think his people caught on and he’s had some pretty explosive covers since.
The Eragon movie version of the book, in mass market format. This one has stunning colors, high-concept approach to the way it’s done. Of course, it looks like a movie poster because it IS a movie poster.
