Venturing Out

- March 12th, 2008 at 1:03 am by --KALEB NATION-- -

In Dire Need of a HaircutYesterday I decided to venture off campus to get a haircut. In case nobody has noticed in the videos, I have not gotten a haircut in 2 and a half months and very obviously need one very badly.

I walked to the bus stop, only to immediately jinx my trip by being confronted by three bus stops at the same intersection. Of course it was impossible to tell which one was the right one. I took a wild guess and dashed madly across the street, across another street, and stood under the sign, nervously twitching about to make sure no one was waiting at a different stop and knew something I didn’t. Meanwhile, birds flying by were getting stuck in my mass of hair.

The bus finally arrived and I slid on, greeted by a menagerie of peoples. The bus was not stuffed so there were plenty of places to sit and I immediately chose the one closest to the door in case the need of a quick escape arose. And we were off.

hair-2.jpgI made it to the transfer station, carrying with me my ARC of Carolyn Hart’s new mystery Death Walked In, which comes out on March 25th and was very drawing: though I wish I could, I can’t blame the book for missing my transfer bus and having to wait another half hour at a Jack In The Box (I forgot to cross the street to go southbound). Luckily, I could keep reading until the next bus came.

hair-4.jpgI took the bus across town to the first hair place I had found by searching the internet, and luckily they had no waiting list. I got right in the chair and she set to work.

The difference must really be in the comfort, because it was quite different from when my mom used to cut my hair but cost considerably more (paying anything is more than free). I was quite shocked to find that there is no ‘hair tugging’ to make sure it’s all the right length at the end, and not once did the scissors come dangerously close to leaving me missing the same ear as Van Gogh.

Enough of this! says I. I’ll just wear a wig.All was well and I departed with my new haircut, dashing into a grocery store to get some food. Kroger’s is very different than Walmart. The Walmart close to campus is teamed with college students and full of life, with Hannah Montana posted on every corner and rows upon rows of stuff. The Kroger’s was mostly abandoned except for a lot of elderly people, pushing the carts around. I could hardly find two of the things I needed before I had to dash through the checkout line and back onto the bus to bring me home. Thankfully though, I can see again, and have enough meals to last me for the rest of the week. Two more months and I’m off again!

I Just Got Kicked Out Of The Pub

- February 22nd, 2008 at 7:01 pm by --KALEB NATION-- -

keystone cops No, silly, not like that. They close at 6 on Friday but I was so intent on finishing the last chapter of The Thirteenth Reality I didn’t notice it was 6:12. But it still counts as being kicked out of The Pub (even though it’s not a real pub, either).

Like that time I got suspended off the air. Still counts even though I hadn’t actually done what they thought I did (and in the meantime was still on the air on all the other stations…). What next?

Kay Kay – Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai

- February 14th, 2008 at 5:39 am by --KALEB NATION-- -

No, there is nothing wrong with your computer. For Valentines Day, I found a perfectly fitting song: something no one really understands.

It’s called Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai and it’s by a Bollywood singer called Kay Kay. The title means, ‘Am I In Love?’. You just try to figure it out. I’m talking about the song.

The story of how I found this little gem is quite unusual. A few nights ago, six of us were taking a trip to the grocery store, only to find that the guy driving us had his car full of stuff and only room for one girl to ride with him. In a flash of seconds, I found myself in the car of someone else I still do not know, surrounded by three others with the bass turned up so loud it was shaking the apartment buildings and perhaps the grave of our great university’s founder, thus causing him to turn over once or twice. It is never recommended that when someone calls ‘over here!’ for you to simply jump in, but that was how it happened.

After my ears numbed and my body became accustomed to the light-speed these fellows were racing to break, I settled in to some 50 Cent and Flo Rida, moving my head with the bass to diffuse it across my skin and bones. It was something I had never experienced before: I was actually riding in one of those cars, the mobile concerts you hear passing during rush hour. The only non-rappers I heard the whole trip up were Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and me (yes…down…one notch?…please?..bursting eardrums …fractured ossicles…never mind). But on the trip back, the guys put this one on. Sweet melody! Of course, I didn’t know what he was saying, so once we stopped I asked master disc jockey. I think he thought I was insane at first.

It becomes easy to ignore the language gap. Foreign pop musicians, especially Spanish (those not including accordions) and those from India, are quite rivals to American music. Their languages seem to have a more natural singing quality to them. Up until now, it has been impossible for me to find any foreign tracks, since when I hear them on the radio I can’t decipher any of the words! I got lucky on this one, and thus all’s forgiven with between my eardrums and the bass boosters.
