Google Kills Chinchillas [video]

May 14th, 2010 at 8:00 pm by --KALEB NATION--

I’m linking to my latest video instead of embedding, since the thumbnail is kinda gross.

As I say in the video, I’m not one of the crazies, but killing animals just for showy furs is an abuse. I have a lot of kids who watch my videos. I’m not advocating censorship since (supposedly) these companies have legal right to sell these jackets, as atrociously gaudy-looking as they may be. I can’t tell other people what not to advertise just like they can’t tell me what not to advertise.

But Youtube is owned by Google, and is thus a private company which can refuse to allow these ads through their terms of service. Even simply from an aspect of marketing and PR, these types of ads cause viewers to leave, and in some cases not come back. It’s especially ridiculous that they’re being shown in the Pets & Animals section next to videos of live chinchillas.

The advertisement linked me directly to this page, but I have screenshots of the ad and the site below.

(Pictures are below the fold since I have young kids come here)

And the ad that was next to my video:

ADDED: @Wisegirl365 actually spotted this on Chilla’s website (middle ad block, at the bottom)

ADDED 5/15/10: and to add even further insanity, look at which ad is now showing beside this very video:

This isn't my first time I've run into something like this. When I was younger (10-13), I was playing on a little kid's website, and I saw a fun looking ad from Google for a different game website. So, I went there because I though, "Oh, it's a kid's website--they wouldn't show an ad for something that could get me in trouble," and not even a couple hours later, a guy started trying to sexually harrass me online.

You can BELIEVE the website I was originally on got a very long, angry message from an outspoken pre teen. Oh, and the guy that started trying to harrass me got a pretty extensive talk about how inappropriate that was. Yeah, I wasn't a scared kid. I'd tell someone off.

This kind of thing is exactly what Google needs to be aware of. Their ads have a very strong impact on a large body of people, and they need to watch out for these types of ads. Whether it's a misleading "game" ad or an animal pelt ad, Google is a big enough company to recognize that some things are clearly not appropriate.
  • that is horrible. i literally started crying. sorry, i'm a vegitarian, and i freak out when i see this kind of stuff. :(

People can be so disgusting! Why would anyone want to harm an innocent creature just to wear it and/or make money off it! It's sickening!!
  • I would like to thank you so, so much for this, Kaleb. I noticed the ad beside your most recent video, and it did, in fact, cause me to click out of it, so that my little sister (who enjoys watching your videos with me) would not see it.
