Five Things

July 3rd, 2008 at 12:04 am by --KALEB NATION--

Starting Monday, I hit the notebooks, staying at the local Pub That Is Not A Pub from morning until near closing time, editing and revising The Farfield Curse. I managed to walk in and get my usual, favorite spot that is one table away from the corner, so that I don’t appear to be hiding in the shadows, my laptop cable will reach the building’s only plug, The Writer Is Workingand I can still occasionally get a glimpse of the sun (which is very quickly becoming a faraway memory: the sun? What sun? Where? Surely you jest). I’m almost beginning to feel like an old, reclusive witch <—-

Things have thankfully been going smoothly. I am doing things in an order, first working on a bit of cutting in the length department, so it’s easier later when I need to add certain things that were missing. This is where the writing of the book turns into a labor of love: editing those words is really, really hard, but entirely worth it for the end result.

I have a goal of cutting a certain number of pages. To do this, I must take a fine-toothed comb to every line, trying to cut any odd words and condensing paragraphs in order to save one or two lines. One or two lines do add up. So far, just by combing the first 120 pages, I was able to cut 20 out in the first few days. It was all vicious (and slightly wicked) glee search-and-destroying those superfluous words. I spent almost an hour trying to condense two lines out of one chapter, so that I could cut the last page of it, which only had two puny lines dangling there.

The best part is that it’s like trimming back a big ugly tree into an Edward Scissorhands-esque plant sculpture. By the time we’re through, this book will be loads ahead of where we started out.

While taking a much-needed break, I decided to answer a question put to me recently: what will you do if you become a really famous author? It sounds thrilling, odd, scary and wonderful at the same time. So, I decided to make a video in response, which includes Lemony Snicket’s head, a phone call to J.K.Rowling, the Electric Light Orchestra, my bookshelf and more. Also, sunburn.

Hope you like it :D

hmm hmmm hey you with the pretty face, welcome to the human race! it's not raining; mr. blue sky is living here toda-ay-ay!

    I love me some ELO.

As for signing random copies of your books in the book store, that would be brilliant. When I go to buy your book, I am so looking through every single copy. ;)

Kaleb, Love the video. it was awesome. I was going to go e-mail you but I always write really long emails and I checked your website and BAM! you're talking about editing. Go figure. Love you. I'm a Twihard. Like you and Micheal Welch have recently become my best friends. you don't know me but I love reading your blogs. Thanks for being a guy trying to read twilight or I never would have discovered you. And then I never would have read you're book. And I'll try really hard to make sure you're a really famous author someday.

    Ha! Brilliant vid.

I may have to buy a ridiculous amount of your book, so you achieve the famousness level required for that Simon Cowell scene. I would LOVE to see that. :D
  • Wren
    HAHA!!
At the rate your going, you'll have more fans before your book even comes out than some authors get after writing a whole series.
When I watched your video, I laughed so hard, but there was no one home to startle but the cat.
(Perhaps if a vampire bites a gnome, the VAMPIRE will turn into a GNOME, HA!)
Your phone looks red now, btw. Maybe it got sunburned.
  • "if I become a famous writer"******
  • great vid..i think i'll do a blog about "if I become famous writer" some time in the future.
  • Good luck with the editing process.
I'm a writer too, though not as fortunate as you to be getting published :D
If you have any "tips", feel free to throw them out there lmfao.

So I just randomly stumbled upon your website by surfing and link clicking. But from what i've read it seems that your book is another to add to my list of books to read. I hope it's as good as i'm anticipating. And I also admire that you are reading Twilight (are you reading the rest of the saga?) even though it has obviously been found a more romantic...girly book. Haha. Good luck with your editing!
  • Corinne!
...you are such a picture recycler. way to use that picture twice.
[well, at least you're recycling... yay, a bright side!]
good luck with your deiting stuff! it sounds productive, and rewarding. and i'm going to buy your book the day it's released. seriously.
  • Kev
Hey! Good luck on your book! I cannot wait for it to be out so I can buy it!

I must seem like a hermit when I write. When I get an ispiration for something, I lose track of time and what I'm really supposed to be doing. The things that I'm supposed to be doing always end up being put on the back burner when it comes to writing. Like right now. I'm clearly supposed to be doing my laundry for camp (which I put to the VERY last minute... 12 AM the day before I go to camp), but I'm addicted to ready your blogs. Is that a bad thing? Many would say so... I'd simply say I'm keeping up with local authors. :)

The sun is a horrid thing when I don't have sun block! I have gotten sun burns on top of sun burns in the past month! And that is with a ton of sun block... At least when I glow in the dark, it'll be red, not white.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to reading your book! I have to force myself to NOT get obsessed with finding the parts that I don't like in my book right now. Again, I should be doing my laundry, but I'm going to sleep now. At least I got one load done...

  • I have the opposite problem with the sun... I seem to have a slight farmer's tan developing :(

Great video. I like the signing the books idea - it would be a pleasant surprise to whoever bought it, but they would probably think that it was a fake, so maybe not.

I love Iago. When he and Abu get together... magic!
  • I lock myself away to write/revise mid-next week. Eeek. :)
  • YouKnowWho
Simon Cowell to play Kaleb Nation in his autobiographical film!
  • The sun? What the heck is that? I've never heard of such a thing. Oh... is it that big, yellow thing that occasionally decides to shine its face upon Michigan? OH! :P

Hilarious video. And I can so totally see you doing all of those things, too. ;)

Ah sounds like you're having fun. If ever you feel the need to break down and cry, make sure you take a picture and send it to me.
  • tania-la
LOL Stephenie hung up on you!!!!!! I dunno what a gnome and a vampire would make...hmm...a vampome? a gnampire? LOL :P
  • stacey
freakin hilarious! you vids get better every time

  • Mom
You are HILARIOUS!!! It's hard to believe this is the same shy, quiet, insecure fellow I had to force to go to the airport to pick up Maureen Wittmann for the Book Fair in our home town just 3 or 4 years ago--much less the guy I had to force to write a paragraph on the "apples and bananas" on the table. Keep up the good work and always give glory to God --the One we receive all our blessings from. Love, Mom

ha ha! i'm so glad your editing is going so good. and that video was just incredible, i laughed so loud my mom looked over to see what was wrong! (:
