The Farfield Curse Music

me and the gnomeIf you are one of the many people who have read the first few chapters of The Farfield Curse in advance, you’ll enjoy this; and even if you haven’t (email me to remedy that), this new song will give you a taste of how I imagine the prologue. If you haven’t read it, think of a woman driving through the misty night, trying to escape with her child, while at the same time knowing inside she will not survive the person who is following her:

A bit darker than my other tracks, with synths this time and sharper violins. This is still the first draft so everything may not be mixed as it should.

Sometime a while back, I realized something very interesting about music and stories. I had just downloaded nearly half of the Pan’s Labyrinth movie soundtrack and was writing away to it, when I realized that I had just bought music to a movie I had not even seen before. Most of the soundtracks I had gotten before came from films I had enjoyed. This soundtrack, however, was so striking I could imagine any story I wanted to it.

I realized then that music and stories are intertwined enormously. Great stories always have great soundtracks. The two seem to accompany each other, both when writing a book and when reading it.

What started out as ‘seeing if I could do it’ has very rapidly turned into a new hobby. I just finished that one this morning and already I have another track I’m working on. I am literally having enormous amounts of fun with these just as entertainment for myself.

If you’re new to the site, I have a few more on the music page.

I have Pan's Labyrinth music on my iPod right now! I've always wanted to direct/design a ballet piece to the lullaby.
Your music sounds great, especially for a first draft.
  • Thanks Savannah. I've seen Pan's Labyrinth 3-4 times already and it's great. i just hadn't seen it before the soundtrack :D
  • That's very interesting what you say about the soundtracks and movies being entwined, particularly because Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favorites (it was one of the first movies I ever snuck in to see! Oh!)

Today I was watching the movie Pi (the thriller about a numbers-obsessed guy trying to find the equation for life), and there were two distinct times in the movie (once when he was examining a hallucinatory brain he found at a train station, and once where he was poking around some ant goo) when, because of the music, I knew exactly what he was going to do next (poke the brain with a pencil; eat the ant glue)

...In conclusion, see Pan's Labyrinth. It's pretty awesome, and worth it just for the idea of The Monster (you'll find out once you watch it)

  • Interesting... definitely makes a person think. The mix of synths and violins made for an interesting sound.

Can't wait to hear the next one. =]
