Kay Kay – Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai

No, there is nothing wrong with your computer. For Valentines Day, I found a perfectly fitting song: something no one really understands.

It’s called Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai and it’s by a Bollywood singer called Kay Kay. The title means, ‘Am I In Love?’. You just try to figure it out. I’m talking about the song.

The story of how I found this little gem is quite unusual. A few nights ago, six of us were taking a trip to the grocery store, only to find that the guy driving us had his car full of stuff and only room for one girl to ride with him. In a flash of seconds, I found myself in the car of someone else I still do not know, surrounded by three others with the bass turned up so loud it was shaking the apartment buildings and perhaps the grave of our great university’s founder, thus causing him to turn over once or twice. It is never recommended that when someone calls ‘over here!’ for you to simply jump in, but that was how it happened.

After my ears numbed and my body became accustomed to the light-speed these fellows were racing to break, I settled in to some 50 Cent and Flo Rida, moving my head with the bass to diffuse it across my skin and bones. It was something I had never experienced before: I was actually riding in one of those cars, the mobile concerts you hear passing during rush hour. The only non-rappers I heard the whole trip up were Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and me (yes…down…one notch?…please?..bursting eardrums …fractured ossicles…never mind). But on the trip back, the guys put this one on. Sweet melody! Of course, I didn’t know what he was saying, so once we stopped I asked master disc jockey. I think he thought I was insane at first.

It becomes easy to ignore the language gap. Foreign pop musicians, especially Spanish (those not including accordions) and those from India, are quite rivals to American music. Their languages seem to have a more natural singing quality to them. Up until now, it has been impossible for me to find any foreign tracks, since when I hear them on the radio I can’t decipher any of the words! I got lucky on this one, and thus all’s forgiven with between my eardrums and the bass boosters.

bollywood! have you gotten into any other singers or seen any films since? i would recommend the films "om shanti om," "dhoom 2," and "jab we met," if you're looking for any.
  • Eh... you *do* know what the 8 Mile is, right?
